Elara Animation Featured in Heroin’s Grip Documentary
“I didn’t care what I had to do to get that next fix.”
Sacramento, CA – January 2019 – This quote, from the documentary Heroin’s Grip, demonstrates the terrifying power opioid drugs can have over users. In fact, they are the leading cause of accidental deaths in the U.S. Along with heroin, the opioid drug category includes codeine and fentanyl as well as prescription drugs such as hydrocodone, morphine, oxycodone, and more.
Opioid drugs can cause a wide range of health problems — and ultimately lead to a fatal addiction. Those who avoid that, however, still struggle with chemical imbalances in the brain and negative changes throughout the body. To better depict the medical impact of opioids, Heroin’s Grip features a thirty-second clip from Elara’s Opioid animation video.
Elara’s animation illustrates basic opioid information and educates the viewer about this class of drugs. Using 3D medical graphics, it demonstrates how opioids affect the nervous system to relieve pain and produce feelings of euphoria. The Limbic system, which controls emotion in the brain, actually starts to re-define the reward system on opioids and creates feelings of pleasure and relaxation. But after the high, users are left feeling lower than ever — and neglecting everything else to feel that way again.
Heroin’s Grip covers the opioid addiction cycle and its consequences with real-life stories. It follows four families whose lives have been forever changed by opioids in Frederick County, Maryland. In that county alone in 2016, there were 402 heroin or opioid overdoses — with 51 of them resulting in fatalities. And even more troubling is the fact that there are people who want to get better, but there aren’t enough resources to help them. The county has a long waitlist for their detox facilities.
“The heroin and opioid epidemic has devastated hundreds of families, individuals, and businesses all across our country,” Conrad Weaver, Producer/Director of the documentary said. “We see it in the news every day and it’s easy to think that it’s someone else’s problem… it’s not! It’s in our neighborhoods. My neighborhood. My small town. It’s our community’s problem, and we must work together to solve it. I couldn’t simply stand by and watch, I had to get involved.”
As the Heroin’s Grip documentary illustrates, no one is exempt from the grips of addiction. Opioids are a highly addictive substance and the best way to prevent further deaths and devastation is by increasing awareness, education, and resources. Elara is honored to be included in this important documentary about the consequences of addiction and the changes needed to help those grappling with it.
